MY STAR WARS EXPERIENCE

Hmmm . . . how did I end up with STAR WARS in the first place?  Maybe, my Star Wars experience can be said to go back to the first time I came in contact with it.

It was the year 1988. During that period of time, I was literally "obsess" with this TV series called CAPTAIN POWER & THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE. And cartoons like MASK, The Transformers and SHE-RA & HE-MAN seems to be the part of my life. It was also during that period of time that I first saw the movie "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" on TV . . . well, actually the ending of it. Somehow, Darth Vader's shinny head attracted me to the movie. And that Imperial Navy uniforms, strike such a great admiration in me.

Unfortunately, since I was just a 8 year old and there's nobody to tell me what was the movie I just had watched, I never got to follow further this new interest of mine. But somehow Vader's shiny helmet remain in my mind.

Later, around 1991, I started reading a novel called "Heir To The Empire". Somehow, while reading the novel, I felt myself transported into another universe; the Star Wars Universe. The universe that existed in the novel seems to fit what I had dream about ever since I was 4: Space Travels, Aliens, magical power and the reality of good verses evil. And finally, in 1995, when I had little extra freedom in life, I started going head on into the world of Star Wars Fanaticism. Now, I had become a full fledge Star Wars Fanatic.

So what values in STAR WARS that make me love it so much? What so significant of Star Wars that had made me spent so much money and time on it?

In the Star Wars Saga, I had discovered the value of commitment, trust and dedication. I discover that success doesn't come easily and cheap. Look at the REBELLION; in the movie, "A NEW HOPE", they had to scarified all but 3 of their pilots to defeat the evil Galactic Empire temporary at Yavin 4. And then, in THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK, they suffered a major loss at Hoth and also lost an important outpost.

But all these major losses never put the Rebel Alliance off. They continue to fight against the evil Galactic Empire. Great war strategy were constructed, new weaponary were continuously created. And finally, at the Battle Of Endor, the Rebel Alliance finally won the war. And with the new success, the New Republic was born.

The SW saga also taught me that things are not always what they seems to be. Who would had guess that the evil Darth Vader was previously a great war hero and father to the Rebel Alliance hero, Luke Skywalker?  Who would had thought that a man as evil as Darth Vader could be turn into a good man again?

And almost every words uttered by the Star Wars characters are words of wisdom. From Yoda, we learnt the value of commitment when given with an important task:

"Try Not. Do. Or Do Not. There's No Try!"

Yoda also taught us the value doing the impossible and trust our fate. He made Luke Skywalker train both physically and mentally to achieve a better understanding of the Force. And he "tell" us that the best way to take hold of our destiny is to face the destiny given to us now. And we must overcome our fear, angers and aggression.

And from people like Qui-Gon, we learnt the value of trusting our  instinct and doing beyond what we believe we can do:
"It will be a hard life . . . one without reward. . . without remorse . . . without regret . . . a path will be placed before you . . . the choice is yours alone . . . do what you think you cannot do . . . It will be a hard life, but you will find out who you are . . ." -- Qui-Gon, The Phantom Menace.

In recent years, through an assignment I did for one of my Polytechnic module, I discovered that Star Wars a
Hence, of all Science Fiction movies and saga, I choose the Star Wars Saga. For it gave me a new meaning to life. It inspired me with words of wisdoms and offers encouragement for the world of fear and chaos found today. It drive me forwards as leaders to be. And I still like Vader's shiny head . .  .
